The fourth week of NFL football comes to a close tonight as the Kansas City Chiefs host Washington on Monday Night Football. ESPN has the game at 5:30 p.m. PT, with Sean McDonough and Jon Gruden in the booth, and Lisa Salters on the sideline.
This is a matchup of quarterbacks of note for San Francisco 49ers fans. Former 49ers quarterback Alex Smith and the Chiefs are off to a hot start, sitting at 3-0 with road wins against the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Chargers, and a home win over the 2-1 Philadelphia Eagles. Smith is playing the best football of his career, having completed 77.4 percent of passes for 774 yards, with seven touchdowns and no interceptions. Kareem Hunt however has been the engine for this offense, rushing for a league-leading 401 yards, with four touchdowns. He won’t maintain his 2,138 yard pace, but he’s clearly on fire.
They host a 2-1 Washington team that bounced back from a tough home loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Washington has beaten the Los Angeles Rams and Oakland Raiders, and are tied atop the NFC West. Kirk Cousins struggled in Week 1 but has been coming around the past couple weeks. Running back Chris Thompson has been the big emerging threat for Washington, leading the team with 350 total yards and four touchdowns. He is averaging 8.5 yards per rush and 17.8 yards per reception.
The Chiefs are a touchdown favorite. Washington is playing well, and Kareem Hunt faces his first top ten rushing defense. Jim Tomsula has done big things with the Washington defensive line, and the unit as a whole ranks third in run defense. It will be a stiff test, but I think Hunt will pass, and the Chiefs get the cover.
