Kyle Shanahan caught errant Brian Hoyer pass, was not pleased

Juuuuuust a bit outside.

NFL: San Francisco 49ers at Arizona Cardinals Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brian Hoyer had a rough day on Sunday, completing 49 percent of his passes, and struggling to get much consistency going in the passing game. At times his receivers were dropping easily catchable passes. However, at times it felt like Hoyer could not hit the broad side of a barn. There might have been some bad routes run, but there were also some throws from Hoyer that were just off the mark.

Here’s one such poor connection. Trent Taylor is the intended receiver, but he is too far down the field, with Hoyer dropping it in closer to the defender than Taylor. And head coach Kyle Shanahan ended up hauling in the catch. In the GIF below, we see him drop his play sheet, haul in the pass, and quickly toss it to the ground, seemingly in frustration.

Without seeing the play call, we don’t know with certainty that Trent Taylor ran the correct route. However, we do see a pass end up well out of bounds. Even with a different route that cut off earlier, Taylor was not going to be hauling in that pass. It’s just one of the many inconsistencies that cost this team on Sunday.
