By tank mode, I am not saying Shanahan isn't going to try to win every game he possibly can. It is more of his wholesale approach to playing his younger players and giving them experience. At least two good things can come from doing this. The players gain experience and the coaches are able to evaluate them during game situations so they have a better overall idea of what positions we are going to need to fill during the off season.
I know this is a different situation than when Jim Harbuagh was around and we are not fighting for a championship but I always thought Harbaugh did not use his younger players enough. As a result, players would come up for a contract extension and we still had no idea of what we had with that player. I am really glad to see Shanahan is taking the time to see what his less experienced players can do.
The up side of losing games is obviously getting a higher pick in the draft that not only helps us in the first round but is huge in helping us possibly land great players in the following rounds too. I am very happy to see guys like Witherspoon and Breida getting plenty of playing time and I am hoping Hikutini will get more playing time as the season progresses. It is great to see him at least make it onto the 53 man roster.
I am also extremely glad to see Dwight Clark being honored on Sunday. I remember watching him when he first started and thinking; "that guy is pretty good, where did he come from?" It wasn't too much longer before he started making history. Hopefully 49ers.com will have the whole ceremony on video.
Anyway, onto those sizzling hot links.
