The San Francisco 49ers will continue their search for win No. 1 in seven days when they travel to face the Philadelphia Eagles, but Arizona in two weeks is looking more winnable. The Cardinals lost quarterback Carson Palmer to a broken arm. He will have surgery and is expected to miss at least eight weeks.
Drew Stanton replaced Palmer in the lineup as the Cardinals were thumped 33-0. Arizona has a bye in Week 8, and then travels to face the 49ers in Week 9. Bruce Arians announced after the game that Stanton will start that game, and I imagine Blaine Gabbert will be his backup. The Cardinals kept both Stanton and Gabbert on the roster, with Gabbert inactive each week.
The Cardinals could potentially sign a third quarterback, and y’all know who I think they should sign! But I doubt it happens. Odds seem pretty good they’re prepared to roll with the combination of Stanton and Gabbert. That’s going to be something to watch.
