Golden Nuggets: Reid is a linebacker?

Like many of you, I’m still trying to wrap my head around this whole Reid-linebacker-not-a-safety business. Last year, the 49ers were going to have Bruce Miller coming in as a tight end until he unceremoniously decided to clock elderly folk and they outright released him. The move from fullback to tight end made sense; the 49ers had no need for the fullback position in Chip Kelly’s offense, and Bruce Miller was somewhat a tight end anyways.

Reid as a linebacker is puzzling. If it was something they were doing with him in training camp, it’s one thing, but it just seems so out of left field. I get the whole “Best 11 on the field” and the 49ers are devoid of talent right now thanks to John Lynch’s predecessor’s poor management of the roster and the injuries in 2017. Reid as a linebacker just doesn’t seem like a fit. Corner maybe. Putting Reid at linebacker seems the equivalent of having a wide receiver play on the offensive line.

At the same time though, the 49ers roster is so dry that they have to put him somewhere. They are paying him too much and he’s too talented to sit on the bench. I get the logic, but it kinda shows me the 49ers will be looking to draft a linebacker next year to compliment Reuben Foster, because they obviously aren’t happy with the bunch they have right now. This team addressed a lot last offseason and they still have a lot to address. That’s how bad this roster was.
