Solomon Thomas earns second Rookie of the Week nomination

The 49ers first round pick is emerging as a presence on the defensive line.

The San Francisco 49ers came up short on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, but we are continuing to see areas of growth. Defensive lineman Solomon Thomas secured his first career sack, and finished the game with five tackles, including two for a loss.

The performance earned Thomas his second nomination this season for Pepsi Rookie of the Week. This is a fan voted award, but it’s nice to see Thomas get a chance at some recognition. He was nominated for the award in Week 2, when he had four tackles, including two for a loss, and one quarterback hit against the Seattle Seahawks.

Heading into the season, it appeared Reuben Foster would be the first round pick making a more immediate impact. He looked great in the preseason and Week 1 prior to suffering a high ankle sprain. Foster is not expected back this week, but is making progress in his return. With two impact first round picks potentially at their disposal, this bodes extremely well for the continued growth of the 49ers defense.
