The 2017 NFL trade deadline is less than 24 hours away, and that means we will likely hear some last minute rumors surrounding members of the San Francisco 49ers. Sitting at 0-8 in the first year of a rebuilding process, the 49ers have a host of veterans to consider dealing. They don’t have a lot of really good players, but they do have some potentially worth unloading.

The 49ers currently have 14 projected unrestricted free agents next spring. Pending free agents are discounted in value, but deals can still be done. The 49ers could decide they want to sell players for 25 or 50 cents on the dollar to get some draft picks for maneuvering next spring. However, the 49ers could also decide to wait and see how free agency plays out. If the 49ers lose more free agents than they sign, they could be in line for comp picks.

The 49ers have a ton of cap space to play with next spring, so this might all be a moot point. They could sign a whole host of players to continue their rebuilding process. Or, maybe they spend a lot of money on two or three notable players. That is pertinent, because say for example, they sign Kirk Cousins, Malcolm Butler, and an edge rusher. If they don’t sign much else, they could still conceivably walk away with comp picks if they lose enough free agents otherwise.

Below is their list of unrestricted free agents. From that group, the most notable would be Carlos Hyde and Eric Reid. After that, guys like Dontae Johnson, Daniel Kilgore, Tank Carradine, and Aaron Lynch all could potentially impact the formula. None is likely to command a huge contract, but you never know how many end up getting some kind of deal.

My guess is the 49ers are not overly concerned about the issue of comp picks. The more draft picks the better, but with the cap space they have and the holes they need to fill, it would not be surprising to see them sign another sizable class of free agents. But with the trade deadline looming, I thought it was at least an interesting area to note.
