We’re a day removed from the 49ers losing their eighth game of the season and just about an hour removed from head coach Kyle Shanahan saying that C.J. Beathard gives the 49ers the best chance to win, and that he’s having fun working with him.
So much for that.
As usual, I’ve been running the Niners Nation DOOM Index polls to gauge how fans feel about the team following each of their games this season. They have all been losses, and you can see the latest poll here.
But things tonight are a lot different than things last night. The 49ers now have, presumably, a new starting quarterback which could reshape the entire course of the Shanahan and John Lynch regime. Things could go in so many other directions right now so I just wanted to open this up with another question ...
How doomed are the 49ers now? Garoppolo is far from a perfect quarterback and he’s not a guaranteed hit for the 49ers, but he’s certainly better than Beathard is right now, and has a much higher ceiling to boot. He’s better than Brian Hoyer and he’s better than the guys the 49ers had a year ago too.
Immediately, this shouldn’t change much in regards to the plans and hopes for this season. The 49ers won’t suddenly be targeting an 8-8 finish down in an 0-16 hole. I’m extremely interested in how long this move was in the works — have Lynch and Shanahan been targeting Garoppolo all along, or is this a move out of desperation?
I can’t wait to see how this turns out.
How doomed are the 49ers?
