49ers trading second round pick for Jimmy Garoppolo

I, um, wow.

NFL: Atlanta Falcons at New England Patriots Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY Sports

Holy hell, this is officially crazy! ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting the San Francisco 49ers are trading a second round pick to the New England Patriots in exchange for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

Schefter reported the 49ers and Patriots were talking trade earlier Monday, and by this afternoon, the deal had come together. This officially removes Kirk Cousins from the equation for the 49ers. Garoppolo is signed through this season, and I imagine the 49ers will look to get an extension done sooner rather than later. And if the 49ers are not able to get a deal done, they have the option of placing the franchise tag on him.

The 49ers have their own second round pick and the New Orleans Saints second round pick. My guess is this deal involves their own pick since it could be one of the top two or three picks by the time the 2017 season ends.
