The San Francisco 49ers stunned the football world on Monday, trading a second round pick to the New England Patriots for Jimmy Garoppolo. Adam Schefter is reporting the 49ers will deal their second round pick to the Patriots, which means they will retain the New Orleans Saints second round pick acquired this past April.
The 49ers are releasing Brian Hoyer, which means the 49ers will head into this Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals with Garoppolo and C.J. Beathard on their depth chart. My guess is Beathard starts this weekend, but I suppose nothing should surprise us at this point.
Whether Garoppolo starts Sunday, the following Sunday, or any other time this weekend, this deal is more about the long term. For the time being, Garoppolo is a free agent after this season. The 49ers could sign him to a contract extension soon, they could wait and see what he does and sign him later in the season or shortly after the season, or they could franchise him in the spring. Whatever the case, the direction has distinctly changed.
We’ll ask this again once a contract extension is done, but in the meantime, what do you make of this deal? On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the worst deal, and 10 being the best deal, how would you rate this trade?
