How soon does Jimmy Garoppolo start playing for 49ers following trade?

Fooch’s update: Adam Schefter said on ESPN that Garoppolo is not expected to play this weekend.

The San Francisco 49ers made a huge trade on Monday, agreeing to send their own second round pick to the New England Patriots in exchange for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. In order to make room for Garoppolo, the 49ers are expected to release quarterback Brian Hoyer.

The 49ers have not formally announced the trade, but I imagine that will come sooner rather than later. Garoppolo will fly to Santa Clara for a physical, and once he passes that, he’ll join the team for meetings and then Wednesday practice.

This raised a question in my mind. How soon will Garoppolo will be playing quarterback for the 49ers in a game? I would be pretty surprised to see him starting this Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, but could he get into game action by the following week against the New York Giants? The 49ers have a bye after the Giants game, so one option is to let him spend two weeks getting comfortable with the playbook, and then take over the starting QB job during the bye week.

Related to this are the serious issues along the offensive line. The team lost Joe Staley for at least two or three weeks with an orbital fracture. Garry Gilliam replaced a concussed Trent Brown at right tackle on Sunday, and suffered a season-ending knee injury. Brown’s status will not be any clearer for us until Wednesday’s practice. Add in right guard Brandon Fusco being banged up, and the line struggling even before all the injuries, and this is not an ideal situation.

One way they could handle this that will never actually happen is to just put him in bubble wrap until the offseason workout program. Have him practice but not play with this abomination of an offensive line. In the offseason, invest heavily in the line, and go from there. Again, I realize the 49ers will never do this, but it’s certainly one option in light of how bad things have been in recent weeks.
