Golden Nuggets: Getting Jimmy G

The 2nd start of C.J. Beathard’s career went as bad as it went for his 1st start. The 49ers took a 33-10 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. He had a rough day to say the least. He finished the game with 167 yards and was sacked 4 times. He threw a touchdown and had 2 interceptions, one that was taken for a pick-6. On Monday, the 49ers made a move that ends the C.J. experiment.

The 49ers made a trade with the New England Patriots. The 49ers sent one of their 2018 2nd round picks for Patriots’ backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and cut Brian Hoyer. This has signaled that the 49ers could be out of the Kirk Cousins’ sweepstakes. The 49ers are expected to quickly work on a long-term deal with Jimmy since he is a free agent at the end of the season. It will be interesting to see when the 49ers actually play him. Their offensive line is decimated with injuries and risking your future quarterback behind the current line could be dangerous.

John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan have shown that they are not shy in making big moves if they think it will help their future. This move for a potential franchise quarterback shows that they may not be in love with the 2018 rookie quarterback draft. With Jimmy on the roster, it allows Kyle and John more flexibility in the upcoming draft so they do not have to reach for a quarterback and can focus on a player with more game-changing ability.
