The San Francisco 49ers have made a roster move, waiving safety Lorenzo Jerome and claiming Dexter McCoil off waivers from the Los Angeles Chargers.
Jerome is an undrafted rookie who made the full roster after a strong training camp and preseason. He played a significant role on defense when Jimmie Ward and Eric Reid were injuries, and played 20 snaps in Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts.
I imagine Jerome will be placed on the team’s practice squad if he clears waivers. He was a very important player in the preseason, starting three games at safety. I doubt the 49ers are done with him, so hopefully he clears waivers — at least for us.
McCoil is a better fit at strong safety, and is in his second year in the league. He made the Chargers as an undrafted free agent a year ago and played special teams in all 16 regular season games. He’s 26 years old and has also played Arena Football and Canadian Football.
The 49ers will likely get Reid back from a PCL injury for their next game after he missed the last few.
