Golden Nuggets: Welcoming the New Guy

Jimmy Garoppolo arrived in the Bay Area today and the 49ers formally introduced him with Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch by his side. The 49ers traded a 2018 2nd round pick for Tom Brady’s backup on Monday. They are hoping to finally have their franchise quarterback and give Kyle the man to run his offense. The 49ers reportedly had interest in Jimmy this past offseason, but were unable to make the trade happen. On Monday, they were able to and it seems the Patriots initiated these trade talks.

The next step for him would be to get him ready to run Kyle’s offense. He will not play this weekend and it may be a couple of weeks before he plays. Even if he is able to get a quick understanding of the offense, the 49ers should wait to get him game time. The offensive line is a mess with all the injuries and the 49ers shouldn’t risk their quarterback of the future until he has protection. With nothing to play for this season, the team can trot out C.J. Beathard until the offensive line is healthy and Jimmy has a handle on Kyle’s offensive playbook.

The Jimmy G trade was not the only move the 49ers made before the deadline passed. Penalty prone cornerback Rashard Robinson was shipped off to the New York Jets for a 2018 5th round pick. This means that Ahkello Witherspoon is cemented as the starter at corner. The team also cut cornerback Will Redmond, who was a Trent Baalke draft pick. He was on injured reserve and hadn’t played in the season and a half he’s been on the team.
