Video: C.J. Beathard offers some tips to Jimmy Garoppolo in first practice throwing session

The new 49ers quarterback got his first practice started on Wednesday.

The San Francisco 49ers were at practice Wednesday, beginning on-field preparations for their Week 9 matchup with the Arizona Cardinals. The 49ers are looking for their first win, but Wednesday’s practice was about a slightly bigger picture item. Newly acquired quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo took the field for the first time as a member of the 49ers.

Garoppolo was acquired Monday evening, and flew out to Santa Clara Tuesday. He got the playbook via iPad to start preparing, and spent Tuesday and Wednesday with head coach Kyle Shanahan and QB coach Rich Scangarello learning the offense. On Wednesday afternoon, he got to start implementing what he’s learned.

Cam Inman got the video above, showing Garoppolo take a couple practice snaps alongside C.J. Beathard. After the first snap, they swap sides, and Beathard appears to be showing Garoppolo what to expect when the pass catcher runs his route.

It’s going to be a lengthy learning process for Garoppolo, and it’s cool to see Beathard there to offer some tips from what he knows. Beathard is a rookie, but he’s been working with this playbook since early May. There is plenty he can offer Garoppolo in the meeting room and practice. Garoppolo is going to take his job before too long, but he’s clearly a team player.
