San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan announced on Friday that C.J. Beathard will be the starting quarterback on Sunday against the New York Giants. Jimmy Garoppolo will serve as the backup quarterback.
There had been some questions as to whether or not Garoppolo might claim the starting job this week. On Wednesday, Shanahan said he expected Beathard to start, but he also said they were taking it one practice at a time. They would see how Beathard did on Wednesday, and then figure out Thursday, then do the same for Friday.
Garoppolo has a little over a week under his belt with the playbook, and now six full practices. The team heads into their bye next week, and I have to think his chances of starting in Week 11 are pretty significant. But, we’ll see what Sunday brings first, and much like Kyle Shanahan, take it one day at a time.
