49ers-Giants odds: Pro money has flipped the spread considerably

The 49ers opened as favorites in Week 11, but that has changed considerably.

The line for the San Francisco 49ers Week 10 matchup with the New York Giants opened with the 49ers installed as one-point favorites. By Wednesday morning, they were one-point underdogs. Since then, the line has changed even further. Our friends at Odds Shark track lines across the Internet and in Las Vegas, and the 49ers are either a 2.5- or three-point underdog at various sportsbooks.

I thought this was due to the question marks at the quarterback position. Some sportsbooks might have figured if Jimmy Garoppolo takes over the starting job, that changes the 49ers value. However, after asking around, that is not really the case.

Todd Fuhrman, from the Bet The Board podcast and formerly an oddsmaker at Caesars Palace, offered some thoughts on the line move. He said that significant professional money came in on the Giants. Oddsmakers might move the line if a lot of amateur random bettors are betting on one side. But they are guaranteed to move the line if they get considerable wagers from professionals with track records of success. In this case, the pros think the Giants are the play here, even going on the road and both teams playing some bad football.
