The San Francisco 49ers have added another player to their roster in the form of defensive lineman Sheldon Day. He was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the 49ers claimed him off of waivers.
Day rejoins Robert Saleh, who was the Jaguars’ linebackers coach for the past three seasons. Day was drafted by the Jaguars in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, and has appeared in 22 games with 11 tackles, two sacks and one pass defensed.
In six games this year, Day has three tackles, a sack and one pass defensed. He played college ball at Notre Dame, where he had 141 tackles, 32 tackles for a loss, eight passes defensed, 7.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 48 games.
The 49ers have had injury after injury on the defensive line, so adding another lineman isn’t too surprising. Saleh’s familiarity with Day makes him a touch better than a free agent signed off the street at this point in the season, but we’ll see if he actually finds his way onto the field this season.
