The bye week is officially over and now the anticipation begins. Who will be named the starting quarterback for the 49ers on Sunday? Led by C.J. Beathard, the 49ers won their 1st game of the season before they headed to their bye week. The 49ers’ other option is Jimmy Garoppolo, who they traded a 2nd round pick for in early November.

C.J. Beathard took over starting duties from Brian Hoyer in Week 7. Last weekend, C.J. won his 1st game as an NFL quarterback against the New York Giants and he played well. He led the team to their 1st win in Kyle Shanahan’s rookie head coaching campaign. He has been beaten up his previous starts and each time was able to get back up and play. It was great for him and the team to get that 1st win out of the way. If he is given the start by Kyle, he is deserving of it.

At some point this season, the 49ers have to get Jimmy Garoppolo under center. They need to find out if he can play because he is up for a contract this offseason and could receive a lot of money. While it may be hard to bench C.J. after his performance against the Giants, it seems clear that C.J. is destined to be a backup in the NFL. The team needs to know if Jimmy can be the franchise quarterback going forward. Jimmy has had enough time to learn the playbook and the 49ers need to see if he can play in it. This offseason is going to be a big part of the rebuild and the 49ers’ front office needs to know if their quarterback situation is taken care of with Jimmy in the fold.
