Niners Nation DOOM Index: Post Week 12 loss to the Seahawks edition

The 49ers lost to the Seahawks on Sunday, and are fairly doomed. How doomed, though?

NFL: Seattle Seahawks at San Francisco 49ers Stan Szeto-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers are no longer riding a winning streak after falling to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. Of course, “streak” is a misnomer, as they had just a single win, but it was their first win. There are many wins like it in the NFL, but that one belonged to them.

Sunday was not a win. Some fans are pretty happy that they got to see Jimmy Garoppolo, and in two plays notched his first touchdown as a 49ers player. I’m more concerned with the alarmingly poor play from the offensive line, play that might as well be the biggest deterrent to allowing Garoppolo to play.

Think about it like this: in boxing or mixed martial arts, there is an athletic commission that has to approve every fight. Theoretically, if one fighter is medically unfit or so completely and utterly out of their element (guy off the street vs. Ali) that they have no chance to succeed and a high risk of getting hurt, it is that commission’s duty to stop the fight from happening.

Allowing Garoppolo to start behind that offensive line is borderline negligent, though that also should apply to C.J. Beathard, a rookie giving it his all and taking a beating on every play. Beathard shouldn’t have to play behind that offensive line either.

But such is the state of things now. Beathard is doomed. Garoppolo is inevitably doomed. Erik Magnuson and Darrell Williams are doomed. Laken Tomlinson is so doomed it hurts me to think about him. Trent Brown is the least doomed, but he was out with a shoulder injury, so for the sake of this paragraph can also be considered quite doomed.

You know the drill. Sunday’s game sucked, but does that final drive have you feeling less doomed? Quite a bit less doomed? More doomed just out of principle? The past results for the Doom Index, including the last edition, can be found at this gallery right here.
