Two passes, two completions and one touchdown in 67 seconds was Jimmy Garoppolo’s stat line in his 49ers debut. Jimmy was on the bench until C.J. Beathard was injured with a minute left in the game. There had been anticipation for this moment since the 49ers announced the trade to get Jimmy from the New England Patriots. Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch had no timetable for his debut, but an injury forced him into action.
C.J. Beathard and the 49ers were unable to produce much offense against the Seattle Seahawks. The offense could only muster 2 field goals before Jimmy’s touchdown pass. C.J. was sacked 3 times and was hit numerous other times by Seattle’s defense. It seemed only a matter of time until he was knocked out of the game. The offensive line was thoroughly dominated by Seattle. C.J. threw for 201 yards and had one interception.
With C.J.’s injury not being serious, Kyle Shanahan is giving himself until the middle of the week to name next week’s starter. C.J. suffered a left knee bruise and hip strain. After the beating he took on Sunday, C.J. may need a few days to recover. It seems likely that Kyle will name Jimmy Garoppolo the starter for the next game. There is no reason to put C.J. back in with the beating he’s taking and his performances. He doesn’t look like the quarterback of the future so it’s time to see if Jimmy can be.
