The San Francisco 49ers offensive line has dealt with a variety of injuries this season, and Week 12 brought one more. Right tackle Erik Magnuson, starting place of Trent Brown, suffered a foot sprain and will go on injured reserve. Kyle Shanahan offered some details on it Monday afternoon.
“He got a foot sprain in the first half, I think it was early second quarter, which we didn't know about it. He toughed it out, played throughout the whole game. It was a pretty bad foot sprain, so he's going to have to go on IR. I was pretty amazed. Got a lot of respect for that guy for staying out there and battling through that, especially with how short we were at tackles.”
Magnuson was starting because Brown because a shoulder injury during practice earlier in the week. Shanahan said on Monday that they thought he would be able go Sunday, but the shoulder was bothering him Sunday morning, and so he couldn’t go.
Since he was close before Sunday, that begs the question of if he will be able to do a bit more and play in Week 13. Shanahan played things close to the vest.
“I think it's going to be the same situation. It's going to be day-to-day. You never know how those shoulders are going to react. I know he tried and he was hoping that he could, but he just couldn’t go. I know he's still sore from it today. We'll see how it goes throughout the week.”
If Brown is unable to go, the 49ers would be looking at starting their fourth right tackle of the season. Brown has started eight games, Magnuson has started two games, and Garry Gilliam has started on. Gilliam went on IR three weeks back. If Brown is inactive on Sunday, either rookie Darrell Williams Jr. or veteran Zane Beadles would get the start. The 49ers promoted Williams from the practice squad on November 4.
