Now that we have our quarterback of the future, it is time to sign him to a long term contract and build him an offensive line. We should start by signing a free agent center if at all possible. Then, if we end up with one of the two top spots in the draft, we should try to trade down a few spots and grab Mike McGlinchey out of Notre Dame.

I know a lot of people will disagree with me on taking McGlinchey over an offensive guard but top guards generally go late in the first or second rounds while great tackles go much earlier. Hopefully Garoppolo manages to win five or six games next season and we won’t have another opportunity to draft a top offensive tackle. Joe Staley only has a year or two left in him so it is better to find his replacement sooner rather than later. I would still propose we draft a guard with the early second round pick we receive as part of trading down with our first round pick.

I know drafting offensive lineman with our first two picks doesn’t seem very sexy but establishing a line to protect our quarterback and open holes for our running backs has to be a top priority. Speaking of running backs, I also think it is important to extend Carlos Hyde. I was hoping we were already working on it. Breida and Hyde will do just fine and give us the ability to work on more pressing positions.

The idea of having Jimmy Garoppolo need to prove himself with a less than adequate offensive line and Garcon out of action for the rest of the season is mind boggling. The only thing I want to see is him miraculously staying healthy while getting a head start on learning Shanahan’s system. Give him an offensive line and a couple of decent receivers and he will do just fine. By the way, is everyone else enjoying Jimmy G’s highlight tapes as much as I am? The guy can throw a football!

I wanted Sean McVay and we got Kyle Shanahan, I wanted Eliot Wolf and we got John Lynch, I want Kirk Cousins and we got Jimmy Garoppolo. Hopefully it all works out. We made a commitment, I am more than happy to give it time to work out. If it doesn’t then we will be at the bottom for a long long time but I think it is worth the gamble. I think it beats changing coaches and direction every year.
