Brian Hoyer learned of the Jimmy Garoppolo trade while shopping for kid’s Halloween costume

Even with his new situation in New England, it’s never easy dealing with that kind of news.

The San Francisco 49ers decision to trade for Jimmy Garoppolo came out of nowhere, and it sounds like Brian Hoyer was caught off-guard as well. The former 49ers quarterback had his first meeting with media in New England on Monday, and he described how it all went down from his perspective.

“The one thing I’ve learned about the NFL is never say never to anything, and it’s a business. There’s a business side of it. So you never know what might happen. When Kyle Shanahan called to tell me that this was gonna happen on, I guess it was Monday, I mean I was at the store buying my kid a Halloween costume. So, I was completely shocked that this happened.”

Although Hoyer had already been benched for C.J. Beathard, I can’t imagine he expected this move coming along. I can only imagine standing in a store while your kid tries on Halloween costumes and getting that call from Kyle Shanahan.

Hoyer ended up in a great situation, serving as a backup to Tom Brady. That being said, he’s still human, and this kind of big change would catch anybody off guard. Given that he only had a two-year deal with the 49ers, I don’t know if he was buying or renting in the Bay Area, but relocating on such short notice is certainly a pain in the butt.
