The 49ers hosted their division rivals, the Arizona Cardinals, at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday and dropped their 9th consecutive game of the season to stay winless. They lost 20-10 and continue to inch closer to the top overall pick in the draft. C.J. Beathard started his 3rd straight game and was left battered after the game. He was sacked 5 times on the day and seemed to be hit every time he dropped back. He threw 51 passes and completed just 24 of them. He had a chance to make the game interesting in the 4th quarter, but ended up throwing an interception inside the red zone that killed off the game.
In a recurring theme of the season, the 49ers suffered injuries on Sunday and this added to their total number of players on injured reserve. Starting safety Jaquiski Tartt suffered a broken forearm. In addition to Tartt, tackle Garry Gilliam and tight end Cole Hikutini were also injured and sent to injury reserve on Monday. WR Trent Taylor, fullback Kyle Juszczyk, tight end George Kittle, and linebacker Elijah Lee were also injured. Taylor, Kittle, and Lee will be out next Sunday against the New York Giants.
Luckily for the 49ers, C.J. Beathard was not injured even though he took hit after hit on Sunday. The 49ers will need him to keep playing until Kyle Shanahan and the coaching staff think new quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is ready to lead this team. There is no incentive to trot Jimmy out there other than to see what he can do. But, if the front office thinks he is the future of the team, they will not let him take the shots C.J. took this past Sunday.
