49ers injured reserve list continues to grow

The Week 10 practice participation report won’t be much better.

The San Francisco 49ers placed offensive tackle Garry Gilliam on injured reserve Tuesday afternoon, bringing their total on IR to 18. He followed the Monday additions of safety Jaquiski Tartt and tight end Cole Hikutini. With those three roster moves, here is the full list of players currently on the 49ers injured reserve list.

RB Joe Williams
WR Pierre Garçon
WR Aaron Burbridge
TE Cole Hikutini
OT Garry Gilliam
OG Joshua Garnett
DL Arik Armstead
DE Tank Carradine
DT Chris Jones
LB Malcolm Smith
LB Jimmie Gilbert
LB Donavin Newsom
CB Prince Charles Iworah
CB Asa Jackson
FS Jimmie Ward
S Jaquiski Tartt
DB Don Jones
S Chanceller James

Those are the current IR players, but they are not the only players lost to injury this season. Ronald Blair was on IR, but has since been activated. He will likely be followed off IR by Tank Carradine. Last week, in announcing the trade of Rashard Robinson and the release of Brian Hoyer, the 49ers announced the release of cornerback Will Redmond from the IR list. Additionally, the 49ers waived wide receiver B.J. Johnson off IR on Sept. 26, and reached injury settlements with linebacker Jayson DiManche and cornerback Zach Franklin.

That brings us to 22 players who have dealt with either season-ending injuries or injuries that required a significant roster move. The 49ers will unveil their first practice participation report later this afternoon, and it is safe to say we’ll see a whole bunch of names on the list. Kyle Shanahan ran down part of that list on Monday.

Shanahan said that Trent Taylor, George Kittle, and Elijah Lee were already expected to be unavailable for Sunday. Joe Staley is expected to be out through the bye, and Solomon Thomas’ knee injury likely will cost him this week as well. Here’s the list of players Shanahan mentioned that will show up on today’s practice participation report.

FB Kyle Juszczyk
WR Trent Taylor
TE George Kittle
OT Joe Staley
OG Brandon Fusco
DL Solomon Thomas
DE Aaron Lynch
DT D.J. Jones
LB Elijah Lee
CB Dontae Johnson
CB K'Waun Williams

Reuben Foster was listed as limited all three practices last week, so my guess is we see him on the report again this week. Matt Breida, Trent Brown, Brock Coyle, and Eric Reid were all listed on the injury report last week, but were full participants by the end of the week. The only other notable names would be a veteran like Elvis Dumervil, who gets a veteran’s day off each week.

All of this is to say, it’s going to be a lengthy injury list this week. The 49ers don’t have any IR moves left to make, so they will likely have some decisions to make if they want to get 46 healthy players ready for Sunday. With at least 11 injured players heading into this week, it’s going to be dicey, to say the least.
