Earlier this week, the line came out for the San Francisco 49ers home game against the New York Giants, and the 49ers were a rare favorite at -1. Rare in it being the only time we’ve seen that this year. However, heavy action on the Giants has swung that line back, and the 49ers are now a one-point underdog, according to Odds Shark.
You can still get a pick ‘em line from some online sportsbooks, but with word that C.J. Beathard will start, people are focusing on the Giants. This is a pretty miserable, with the two teams combining for the fewest wins in a matchup this late in the season.
I chatted with Big Blue View site manager Ed Valentine to discuss this week’s matchup, and at the end I asked for his thoughts about how Sunday’s game will play out. He offered a succinct response that summed this thing up well.
No idea. Meaningless game between two bad football teams. Might be exciting, might be awful. The only thing I'm reasonably sure of is that it won't be well-played.
The 49ers are 0-0, and 4-5 against the spread (ATS), while the Giants are 1-7, and 3-5 against the spread. One interesting ATS number is home vs. road record. The 49ers are 1-3 ATS at home, while the Giants are 3-1 ATS on the road. The NFL season is a small sample size, so we can’t project much from four-game ATS records. But it’s at least worth noting in a matchup where we’re trying to get any sort of idea about it.
