As has been the norm for the past few weeks, much of the coverage has been of newly acquired 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo. Wednesday’s headlines included a pair of stories sure to add some fuel to what some people (me) are calling “The worst QB controversy of all time”. In one corner, we have a 3rd round rookie QB who was thrust into a starting job and hasn’t technically underwhelmed, mostly because expectations were never very high. In the other, we have Tom Brady’s backup, who has been a 49er for all of a week and a half. With that being said, Kyle Shanahan’s wife has made clear that she’s a fan of Garoppolo (cool it, folks), and is eagerly awaiting his time to start. Beyond that, embattled Giants head coach Ben McAdoo is on record musing about how long of a delay there should be before Garoppolo starts getting live reps.
In decidedly more important news, the injury report continues to be miles (or kilometers, depending on your preference) long, although several key players seem to be returning this week. Eric Reid, Reuben Foster, and Dontae Johnson (among others) were full participants in practice, while Joe Staley and Solomon Thomas practiced, but in a limited fashion. Furthermore, Tank Carradine has returned to practice, although it remains to be seen if he is activated from IR after his two-week roster-exempt practice window.
