Happy Jimmy Garoppolo Day, part 2! The San Francisco 49ers return to action on Sunday, traveling to face the Houston Texans in Week 14. The game gets going at 10:00 a.m. PT on FOX, and will have Dick Stockton and Mark Schlereth calling the game from the booth, and Shannon Spake on the sideline.
The 49ers got their second win of the season last week, beating the Chicago Bears 15-14 in Jimmy Garoppolo’s first start with the team. The offense could not get into the end zone, but Garoppolo set the franchise record for most passing yards (293) in his starting debut for the team. Coming off his strong two-minute drill performance against Seattle, optimism is certainly high heading into this game.
San Francisco faces a Texans squad that looked ready to take the world by storm six weeks ago. They were 3-4 and coming off a tough shootout loss to the Seattle Seahawks, but Deshaun Watson was looking like he would run away with offensive rookie of the year honors. However, he subsequently tore his ACL in practice, and things went south. Tom Savage replaced him and the Texans have gone 1-4 since then.
The 49ers only have one player on their injury report this week. Trent Brown was limited in practice all three days, and is listed as questionable. He is a game-time decision for the second straight week as he continues pushing through a shoulder injury.
Oddsmakers installed the 49ers as a field goal underdog, and after some movement down and then back up, the line sits at 49ers +2.5, according to Odds Shark. A home team gets between 2.5 and three points right off the bat, so this suggests a fairly even matchup on a neutral field. If Jimmy Garoppolo and the offense can build on last week, particularly in improving red zone penalties, this is a very winnable game.
