San Francisco 49ers rookie cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon left Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans with a knee injury, the severity of which we likely won’t know until Monday. Witherspoon will get an MRI on his knee, head coach Kyle Shanahan announced following the team’s 26-16 victory in Houston.
Witherspoon had a good game before he went down with an injury, making some big plays. One in particular was a really solid form tackle on a 3rd-and-1, a play that forced a fourth down. The Texans went for it, and Earl Mitchell came up with a great stop following the Witherspoon tackle.
Hopefully, the injury isn’t serious. At the beginning of the season, Witherspoon was inactive while the beat writers labeled him as a guy who probably wouldn’t even see the field at all as a rookie due to him being too raw.
I don’t think they were wrong about him being raw, but something has definitely clicked for him. He’s been making strong tackles despite that also being a perceived weakness. We’ll know more tomorrow, but for now, enjoy this excellent play:
