San Francisco 49ers rookie cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon has a knee sprain, head coach Kyle Shanahan said in a press conference on Monday. Witherspoon exited Sunday’s win over the Houston Texans with the injury, and he had to get an MRI on Monday.
Fortunately, the injury isn’t something serious like a torn ACL (that was never suggested or reported, of course, just an example), but it’s unclear if he’ll miss time with the knee sprain. For now, Witherspoon is day-to-day and his status against the Tennessee Titans in Week 15 is up in the air.
There is a chance that he could play, though. The 49ers have three games remaining and it would be nice to see as much of Witherspoon as possible. The rookie wasn’t expected to contribute this season after he was deemed too raw following a pedestrian training camp.
But he was pressed into action and has played quite well. He’s getting better at tackling every week, and was all over the field against the Texans, even if DeAndre Hopkins burned the 49ers about a dozen times. Hopkins primarily went up against Dontae Johnson, who was eventually benched for his bad game.
