The 49ers are officially on a winning streak. The 49ers beat the Houston Texans 26-16 to give Jimmy Garoppolo his 2nd straight win after being named the starter. They were able to overcome a great game by DeAndre Hopkins to move their record to 3-10.
Jimmy Garoppolo has been the main reason for the 49ers’ win streak. He finished the game 20 of 33 with one touchdown and one interception. After just missing the 300 yard passing mark last Sunday, he was able to hit the mark against Houston with 334 yards. He threw a touchdown pass to Garrett Celek and should have had another if not for Carlos Hyde dropping a deep pass. Marquise Goodwin benefitted from Garoppolo again. He netted 106 yards and has become a Jimmy’s favorite target.
With Jimmy performing well since being traded, the 49ers will want to lock him up to a long-term deal. But Kyle Shanahan is in no rush to sign him right now and Jimmy knows he is in line to get paid in the offseason, which likely takes pressure off of him. Kyle doesn’t expect any deal to be struck for his new quarterback until the season is over. But the Shanahan-Garoppolo duo is looking very good for the 49ers right now and they will want to keep that going into the future.
The 49ers defense had a rough game in the 1st half trying to guard one of the game’s best receivers in DeAndre Hopkins. He torched the 49ers secondary for 2 touchdowns and 149 yards. He even forced the 49ers to sub out Dontae Johnson for Greg Mabin. But the defense tightened up in the 3rd quarter. They didn’t allow another point to Houston after Hopkin’s 2nd touchdown with 12 minutes in the 3rd quarter. The offense was able to take advantage and scored 13 points in the 2nd half to secure the win.
