Golden Nuggets: Jimmy G’s contract situation

Wednesday, December 13th, 2017 edition of the Golden Nuggets, a daily compilation of San Francisco 49ers links from the Internet

Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch’s trade for Jimmy Garoppolo may be the type of move that turns around a franchise that has had a rough few seasons. Sending a 2nd round pick to New England for Tom Brady’s backup was always a good risk to take and if 2 games can be used as a sample, that risk looks to be paying off. But Shanahan and Lynch are in no rush to sign Jimmy to a long-term deal while the season plays out. Shanahan said that the 2 wins that Jimmy has led the 49ers to has not swayed the way the 49ers are going to look at Jimmy’s upcoming free agency.

The 49ers have a couple of options in regards to Jimmy’s free agency. They can use the franchise tag for the 2018 season or sign him to a long-term deal before the 2018 season. The franchise tag allows them a longer period to work out a long term deal, but the problem could be that the price goes up if his performances continue to improve and quarterbacks’ salaries continue to go up. The quarterback market continues to trend up with each new quarterback contract so waiting another offseason to get a deal done could result in more money for Jimmy.

With a 2 game winning streak, the 49ers are probably out of the running for the #1 overall pick in next year’s draft. Now that the quarterback situation seems to be in a good place, the 49ers can focus on other areas of the team. One glaring area after Sunday’s win was cornerback. While most corners in the NFL have trouble with the TexansDeAndre Hopkins, DeAndre torched the 49ers secondary and showed that the team needs to find answers at corner. The team has gone through a few corners the last few years and have yet to find an answer to the problem. The 49ers will have options available with guys coming back from injury, salary cap space to make runs at top CB free agents, or with their draft picks. Ahkello Witherspoon looks like a player, but more help in the secondary is always welcome.
