The NFL rolled out their weekly nominees for quarterback and running back of the week, and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is on the list. The awards are window dressing to get FedEx a sponsorship, but it’s still fun to see some recognition for a solid performance. You can vote for Garoppolo at

Garoppolo threw for 381 yards and a touchdown in leading the 49ers to a 25-23 win over the Tennessee Titans. It was his second fourth-quarter comeback in three starts, and he has thrown for more yards in his first three starts than any other debut 49ers quarterback has done.

The other two nominees are Eli Manning and Blake Bortles. Manning threw for 434 yards and three touchdowns in a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Bortles threw for 326 yards and three touchdowns in the Jacksonville Jaguars beatdown of the Houston Texans.

It’s kind of fitting to see Garoppolo and Bortles on this week’s ballot. They square off this coming Sunday in a matchup that is a lot more interesting than I think most of us figured it would be earlier this year. Bortles won’t reach career highs in passing yards or touchdowns, but I would argue he is having the best season of his four-year career. There has been inconsistency, but he is performing better than I expected. The Jaguars picked up his fifth year option for 2018, but now he is playing for a bigger extension. This should be a fun matchup of young quarterbacks with a lot to gain this offseason.
