The San Francisco 49ers got their second win of the season, and two wide receivers were critical to it. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo showed strong accuracy much of the game, but he got great help from Marquise Goodwin and Trent Taylor. Goodwin finished the game with eight receptions for 99 yards, while Taylor had 92 yards on six receptions.
Taylor had career highs in yards and receptions, and that came while dealing with the flu. Kyle Shanahan said that Taylor was throwing up throughout the morning, and had to battle to get on the field today.
It is a bit of an exaggeration to make the Jordan flu game comparison, but it was a big performance from Taylor beyond just the career highs. Five of his six receptions came on third downs, and all of them converted the needed yardage for a first down. Garoppolo targeted Goodwin more, but clearly he was confident throwing to the rookie in critical situations.
The biggest of his catches came on the final drive. The 49ers had a 3rd and 9 at their own 49 with 2:17 to go. If they did not convert, they would have had to go for it on fourth down. Instead, Taylor got up and picked up 33 yards on the catch and run.
And all of that while dealing with the flu!
