The San Francisco 49ers have wrapped up their 2017 season, and they finished with yet another win. The 49ers won their fifth straight game to close the season 6-10, beating the Los Angeles Rams by a final score of 34-13.
The winning streak gives the team some big momentum heading into the offseason, but it did come with a cost in Week 17. Wide receiver Marquise Goodwin took a nasty hit in the second quarter and was quickly ruled out with a concussion. He went to the hospital from the stadium for a precautionary evaluation.
The 49ers finished the season strong against the Rams’ reserves. The Rams deactivated several starters, and sat several more. Jimmy Garoppolo had some struggles, throwing a pair of interception on bad passes, but the 49ers still rolled to victory. While Garoppolo put together another solid yardage performance and threw a touchdown pass, Matt Breida and Carlos Hyde were the stars of this one for the 49ers offense. They combined for 162 yards, with Hyde punching in two touchdowns.
The Rams offense had some moments, but overall struggled to do much with their reserves. Quarterback Sean Mannion and running back Malcolm Brown were unable to come anywhere close to replicating Jared Goff and Todd Gurley. Eric Reid was the 49ers defensive star of the game, seemingly showing up everywhere during the game. Nickel back K’Waun Williams was solid as well, particularly against screens and run plays. And Sheldon Day looked good in the trenches with one of the 49ers sacks.
Once Marquise Goodwin gets out of the hospital, it’s mostly sunshine for the 49ers heading into 2018. They became the first team ever to start 0-9 and win five of their last six games. Jimmy Garoppolo was the big difference for the offense, but he helped raise everybody up over the final five games. It’s hard not to be excited about the future of this team!
