There’s a lot going around about when, where, and why Jimmy Garoppolo needs to be signed to the San Francisco 49ers. John Lynch was on KNBR to tell everyone to pump the brakes on the Garopplo love, but there’s no stopping that train. Garoppolo has an ‘it’ that you don’t see on many quarterbacks.
I agree we need another game or two, but then, if he has continued to play well—back up the Brinks truck. If he’s playing like this with limited knowledge of the playbook and that O-line the 49ers have, think of what he does with better protection and a more wide knowledge of the playbook?
Plus, getting a deal done now would keep any sort of temptation from him going anywhere following a franchise tag(or two). If he balls out the next two games, SIGN HIM! Do not let the season end, do not even dance with the franchise tag, unless if it’s just to keep negotiations going for a week or two. If the 49ers somehow find a way to mess this up, it will go down as the worst decision this franchise has ever made.
Plus, San Francisco could be more attractive. Think about it: go back to New England where you’re constantly in Tom Brady’s shadow and compared to him? Way too soon. Replacing Joe Montana drove Steve Young nuts, almost as much as not getting playing time when Montana was around. Garoppolo can carve his own destiny in San Francisco and it’s been long enough from the Montana/Young eras that he won’t be compared to the two. Well, not too much. Plus that team has bought into what Kyle Shanahan is selling.
Give him two games, then pay the man. Give him his money.
