Ian Rapoport: Some talent evaluators view Patrick Mahomes as favorite QB in the draft

The quarterback class features a lot of questions, and some have a fourth candidate as their favorite in the group.

The San Francisco 49ers have a lot of decisions to make at the quarterback position, and with the No. 2 pick in the draft, many in the media are forecasting the 49ers to look at either Mitch Trubisky or DeShaun Watson. However, with questions about both quarterbacks, as well as DeShone Kizer, it would not be entirely surprising if the 49ers targeted somebody a little later for development.

Last week, NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport made an appearance on the Setting the Edge Podcast, and he had some interesting information about the quarterback class. He reported that some NFL evaluators have told him Texas Tech’s Patrick Mahomes is their favorite quarterback in the draft. He couched that by saying, “we’ll see where they end up” later in the draft process.

It only takes one team liking a guy for him to go earlier than expected, and it really feels like Mahomes could be that guy who surprises people and ends up going in the first round. He is a guy that will get a lot of extreme opinions, but I think he ends up being the most intriguing name to watch as the first round comes to a close. And if the 49ers do pass on a quarterback at No. 2, do they potentially spend their high second round pick on him? We’ll have to consider Mahomes in the context of what Kyle Shanahan likes at quarterback, but even if the 49ers don’t consider him, someone could very well spend a significant pick on him.
