Golden Nuggets: More Assistants Added

Kyle Shanahan has been busy filling out his coaching staff this past week. He will be hiring his defensive coordinator a week after becoming the 49ers head coach. Robert Saleh, the Jaguars linebacker coach, will come to the West Coast to serve as the defensive coordinator. This will be Saleh’s 1st time as a defensive coordinator and he will have a tough assignment to help the last ranked defense turn around.

Robert is the 3rd youngest defensive coordinator in the NFL. He will look to help a defense that was torched last season. They allowed a record 7 straight games with a 100 yard rusher and they allowed 2,654 yards rushing for the year, which was by far the worst in the league. They gave up the most points and allowed the most points per game in the NFL. There were rumors that the 49ers would look to bring Vic Fangio back as defensive coordinator, but he will stay with the Bears this season.

Along with the hiring of Robert Saleh, the 49ers hired Bobby Turner as running back coach. His hiring means that Tom Rathman will not return. Taylor Embree, Mike LaFleur, and Mike McDaniel were also hired to the offensive coaching staff. Taylor will be the offensive quality control coach, LaFleur will be the wide receiver coach, and McDaniel will be the run game specialist. LaFleur and McDaniel follow Kyle Shanahan from Atlanta.
