The San Francisco 49ers are going to be relying on a 1st time GM and 1st time coaches to turn around their team. GM John Lynch, head coach Kyle Shanahan, and likely hired defensive coordinator Robert Saleh will be in roles that they have never had before. The hiring of the coaching staff was late due to Kyle being unable to sign with the 49ers until after his run with the Falcons ended. Most of the tenured assistant coaches had already been hired by the time the Super Bowl ended.
The one spot on the staff that will not be an issue is offensive coordinator. An offensive coordinator will not be needed because Kyle will be calling the plays for the forseeable future. His offensive play calling is the reason that he was high on most head coaching lists. He has worked wonders at most of the teams that he was an offensive coordinator for. Since he has control of the 53 man roster, he will be able to pick the offensive players that will fit in his scheme.
Most of the coaching staff on the 49ers have familiarity with Kyle. Kyle has poached 4 coaches from the Atlanta Falcons in the last week. The running back, wide receiver, quarterback, and run game coach are all former colleagues from Atlanta. The familiarity with each other could be a plus in Kyle’s 1st year. They will know how each other work and have built trust on stops before arriving in San Francisco.
