49ers targeting John Benton for OL coach, per Matt Barrows

The 49ers might have an offensive line coach sooner rather than later.

The San Francisco 49ers have a potential offensive line coach in mind. Matt Barrows is reporting Kyle Shanahan would like to hire Denver Broncos assistant offensive line coach John Benton to helm the 49ers offensive line. This would fill out the main position coach roles on Shanahan’s staff.

Benton signed on with the Broncos in January, and Barrows initially reported the Broncos “are believed to be amenable” to letting him out of his contract to join Shanahan’s staff. Broncos beat writer Mike Klis confirmed that the team has granted Benton permission to interview for the job.

Benton and Shanahan go way back, having worked extensively together with the Houston Texans. Shanahan learned blocking schemes and the like from his father and Gary Kubiak, and I think having a familiar face to teach the rest of the staff and the players is slightly valuable.

Here’s a look at Benton’s resume.

1987-90: Graduate assistant, Colorado State
1990-94: Recruiting coordinator, California University (PA)
1995-2003: Offensive line coach, Colorado State
2003-05: Offensive line coach, St.Louis Rams
2006-13: Offensive line coach, Houston Texans
2014-15: Offensive line coach, Miami Dolphins
2016: Assistant offensive line coach, Jacksonville Jaguars
2017-present: Assistant offensive line coach, Denver Broncos
