49ers to meet with Earl Mitchell per report

Let the defensive transition begin. The San Francisco 49ers are going to take a look at a big bodied defensive tackle who has experience in a 4-3.

The San Francisco 49ers have confirmed Robert Saleh’s hiring as defensive coordinator which means they will be transitioning to a 4-3. They’ll need personnel to do that, and NFL Network reporter Mike Garafolo reports that the San Francisco 49ers will meet with defensive tackle Earl Mitchell.

Mitchell, who was recently cut by the Miami Dolphins, will meet with the Seahawks, Falcons, and Broncos.

From a personnel standpoint, it makes sense to get some people with 4-3 experience to at least kick the tires. Mitchell is a big kid, listed at 6’3, 310 lbs. He spent part of the 2016 season on injured reserve being activated in week 10 but not doing much of anything once returning. Considering his contract, his play wasn’t worth it, especially with younger guys waiting in the wings.

The 49ers could use a big body at nose tackle. The one they currently have, Glenn Dorsey, is set to become a free agent. Would you take Mitchell over Dorsey?
