John Lynch: ‘We had a great discussion and Colin [Kaepernick] left excited’

Whether Kap stays or goes, this is a positive sign for the health of the organization.

The San Francisco 49ers met with quarterback Colin Kaepernick on Wednesday to begin discussing his future, and John Lynch seems to be happy with how the meeting went. Lynch made an appearance on KNBR this afternoon, and he discussed the meeting, which included head coach Kyle Shanahan. Lynch did not go into specifics, but he said the two sides had a positive discussion, and both sides left feeling excited. That being said, he said the evaluation process remains fluid, considering Lynch and Shanahan only have a couple weeks under their belt.

Lynch told the hosts that he had promised Kaepernick he would not speak publicly about the specifics of their conversation. He said some things are sacred, but the conversation was a positive one.

Kaepernick can opt out of his contract between March 2 and March 7. We have heard reports he is expected to opt out, but there have also been reports he is open to a return to the 49ers. Considering the communication issues that were unresolved for much of the past two or three years, it sounds like the new player-management relationship is off to a good start.

It is still possible Kyle Shanahan looks at the film and decides there are better options for the 49ers. However, from a relationship standpoint, this is a good sign. Even if Kaepernick opts out, the fact that they have got a solid base for the relationship is a good sign for any future decisions. Trent Baalke was a tough nut to crack at times, and that seemed to create some divisions from a relationship standpoint. No matter what happens between Colin Kaepernick and the San Francisco 49ers, this is a good sign for the health of the organization.
