Phil Dawson seems ready to come back for season No. 19

Will he return to the 49ers, or will the team make the move to somebody younger?

The San Francisco 49ers do not have a lot of quality free agents to deal with prior to free agency, but one notable player is Phil Dawson. After 14 strong years in Cleveland, Dawson signed with the 49ers in 2013, and has been a rock.

Dawson is set to hit free agency, and his latest tweet suggests he is not yet ready to hang up the cleats.

The 49ers have a lot of holes to fill as part of their rebuild. They’ll need a kicker, but the only real reason to attempt to bring back Dawson is for veteran leadership. The rebuild will focus on youth, but you do still need some veterans who know how the league works and can provide mentorship to younger players.

Every position needs to get a little younger at some point. We don’t even know if Dawson wants to return to the 49ers, although with four years under his belt, he has seemed to enjoy his time in the Bay Area. And given how much time he spent in Cleveland, he might just want what is most comfortable, even if he won’t have as good a shot at a contender. I guess we’ll find out in the next two weeks.
