49ers former director of college scouting joins Packers as college scout

The 49ers front office turnover continues.

The San Francisco 49ers front office has lost another member of the football operations department. A couple days after Tom Gamble resigned from the organization, ESPN’s Adam Caplan is reporting director of college scouting Matt Malaspina has left to take a job with the Green Bay Packers as a college scout.

Malaspina spent over a decade with the 49ers, joining the team as a scout. He was promoted to national scout in 2010, and then to director of college scouting in 2013. He has served in that role ever since, overseeing the college scouting staff and the daily operations of the department.

The 49ers hired John Lynch the week prior to the Super Bowl, and followed that up by hiring Adam Peters to serve as vice president of player personnel. Peters was the Denver Broncos college scouting director, so it’s a role he knows well, and one on which he can handle point. The 49ers also appear to be retaining their team of scouts for the time being, so it is possible the biggest impact will be from an administrative and organization perspective, as opposed to a pure scouting perspective. That’ll be a question worth asking John Lynch next week at the NFL Combine.
