Rams want to speak with Matt LaFleur about joining Sean McVay coaching staff

The Falcons quarterbacks coach could end up popular in the coming week.

Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers have a lot of work to do in filling out the coaching staff, and there remains competition. Shanahan is rumored to be interested in adding Falcons assistants Mike McDaniel and Mike LaFleur, with Matt LaFleur potentially on the radar. Mike and Matt are brothers, with Mike serving as an offensive assistant, and Matt serving as quarterbacks coach. However, the 49ers could have competition for Matt LaFleur.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting the Los Angeles Rams are interested in speaking with Matt LaFleur. New Rams head coach Sean McVay worked with LaFleur in Washington. Kyle Shanahan’s departure from Atlanta means the Falcons need a new offensive coordinator. There are rumors Chip Kelly could get the job, but even if he does not, it sounds like LaFleur will not get promoted.

Schefter is reporting LaFleur is interested in a job with the Rams. LA has hired a quarterbacks coach (Greg Olson), but has not hired an OC. Given that McVay would be implementing his offensive philosophy, the OC might not have quite the same responsibilities of other OCs. Given his QB experience, working with Jared Goff will be particularly key.

The same situation could shake out with the 49ers as well. Kyle Shanahan will implement his offensive philosophy, so it remains to be seen how specifically active the OC will be. Shanahan and LaFleur will finish up their season responsibilities with the Super Bowl. Shanahan is expected to be gone, while LaFleur is under contract and would have to get permission to interview elsewhere. It sounds like the Falcons will grant the permission, but it remains to be seen if it will just be the Rams interested in LaFleur.
