The San Francisco 49ers will formally introduce Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch to the media on Thursday. The long hiring process finished on Monday with the official hiring of Kyle Shanahan. Even with all the reports saying that Kyle would be the 49ers coach, league rules did not allow a candidate to sign until their season ended. The season ended for Kyle in Super Bowl loss.
Now that the 49ers have their head coach and general manager in place, it is time to start filling out the rest of their coaching staff. On the defensive side of the ball, 2 names have been mentioned as candidates for defensive coordinator. New England’s LB coach Brian Flores and Jacksonville’s LB coach Robert Saleh are being mentioned as leaders for the job. There was also a report from PFT, that Saleh could be paired with Falcons’ Jerome Henderson as co-defensive coordinators. Regardless who gets hired, they will have a lot of work to turnaround the 32nd ranked defense and a defense that allowed the most rushing yards in 49ers history.
The offense will likely be run by Kyle, so an offensive coordinator is not a big priority. He had the #1 offense in the NFL this season and he has led a top 10 offense in 6 out of his 9 years as an offensive coordinator. The QB situation will continue to be the biggest offseason question. There are a few potential veteran free agents available. The rumors will swirl around about the free agents as well as the possibility of Colin Kaepernick staying with the 49ers. It will be interesting to see who Kyle and John target for their QB. Kyle has a history of helping QBs reach their career years with him at the helm. The question will be if he can work his magic with the next 49ers QB.
