Kyle Shanahan to handle 49ers offensive coordinator duties, per report

This is not an entirely shocking development.

Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers might have their plan settled for the offensive side of the coaching staff. Ian Rapoport is reporting that the plan is for Shanahan to coordinate the offense himself.

The 49ers are reportedly looking to hire Wagner offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello as quarterbacks coach, Falcons assistant Mike McDaniel as wide receivers coach, and Bucs assistant Jon Embree as tight ends coach. Rapoport tweeted that McDaniel would be the run-game guru, so I am not entirely sure how that will all shake out.

Shanahan serving as his own OC is not entirely surprising. He is one of the league’s proverbial “offensive gurus” and the 49ers are looking for a complete rebuild of their offense. Chip Kelly essentially served in a similar role, but had Curtis Modkins in an official “OC” capacity.

It is still possible Shanahan could hire some general offensive assistants to handle some of the nitty-gritty. And I imagine the game plan will involve some measure of collaboration. But for the most part, this is Kyle Shanahan’s offense and the coaching staff will reflect it.
