With the arrival of Kyle Shanahan on Wednesday afternoon, the cameras were ready to document the opening hours of the new era of the San Francisco 49ers. The once-beloved quill pen had it's air time, some cringe-inducing bro hugs were had, and highly unusual fully-stocked lockers for the new GM & HC were pasted all over social media.
Once the fanfare had died down, the new braintrust of the 49ers got to work. Within a short time, a pair of positional coaches had been signed on, although creating a delicate question as to the future of 49ers legend Tom Rathman. Furthermore, it has been announced that Kyle Shanahan will assume the duties of offensive coordinator, but this does not necessarily rule out a Modkins-like "run game coordinator" who takes the title of offensive coordinator nominally. Do not be surprised if the position remains vacant, based on this information.
All in all, it's a very exciting time to be a 49ers fan. By no means should we expect to immediately take the league by storm and contend - but lengthy contracts afforded to two new faces should inspire confidence that we are in line for an uninterrupted rebuild. A veritable fog seems to have been lifted from the organization, one that has lingered since Harbaugh and Co. made their exit. Between a revolving door of head coaches and increasing fan disdain towards Trent Baalke, it feels nice to have a clean slate. Naturally, there will be some bumps to weather, but we can all rest soundly knowing that any uncertainty or ineptitude on the horizon, at least, will not be the work of Trent Baalke.
