The New England Patriots are really not messing around this offseason. A few hours after dealing for Carolina Panthers defensive end Kony Ealy, New England has made a huge move. The Patriots traded their first and third round picks to the New Orleans Saints for wide receiver Brandin Cooks and a fourth round pick.
The Patriots are coming off a Super Bowl victory, and they are intent on a repeat performance in 2017. They let Martellus Bennett walk, and could lose Dont’a Hightower to free agency, but they are replenishing the team in a variety of ways. Bennett was their No. 2 pass catcher taking on a bigger role once Rob Gronkowski got hurt. Now, the Patriots head into 2017 with an offense that could include Cooks, Gronkowski, Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan, and James White.
LeGarrett Blount is one of their other notable free agents, and his future remains uncertain. He has been visiting with teams, but he could still return to the Patriots. But even if he doesn’t, the Patriots still have money and draft picks to invest in the running back position.
Cooks could add another dynamic presence to the team. Leaving the speedy turf of the SuperDome would normally be an issue, but getting a chance to work with Tom Brady certainly will be a plus for him.
It’s all kind of ridiculous.
